  • Star system is established when by Carl Laemmle of Imp pictures when he hires Florence Lawrence for $1000 a week, then plants a story that she has been killed by a streetcar, only to bring her back to the screen to tremendous fanfare.
  • Denmark movies make a splash because they offer sex in The White Slave Trade.
  • Griffith and his company begins working in Los Angeles during the winters of New York. Most film activity shifts here within the next few years

  • Warner brothers begin producing films. Fox company formed

  • Universal Studios is created by Carl Laemmle
  • Italian epics Quo Vadis? and Cabiria suggest value of feature-length films

  • Hollywood is born when Jesse Lasky rents a barn in L.A. to film Squaw Man.
  • The most popular film of the year, Tillie's Punctured Romance, stars Marie Dressler and Charlie Chaplin.

  • The Fox Film Corporation is formed by William Fox.
  • Douglas Fairbanks stars in his first film.
